iciHaiti - Sign language : Training of executives of certain institutions
The Office of the Secretary of State for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities (BSEIPH), with the support of the United Nations agency for sexual and reproductive health (UNFPA), organized two days of sign language training for certain institutions, including the Office for the Protection of Citizens, the National Police of Haiti, the Ministry of Public Works, the Association of Guides of Haiti, UNFPA and the General Directorate of Civil Protection.

This training, which took place at the Karibe Hotel, aimed to provide managers of these institutions with the tools they need to better support people with disabilities and to better address the issue of disability in the exercise of their functions.

Eddy Lemaire, the head of the Training and Awareness Department at BSEIPH, highlighted in his presentation the different types of impairments, explaining the concept of disability to the participants in a clear and comprehensive manner. The issue of the legal framework relating to the rights of persons with disabilities was addressed in a masterly presentation by Louis Arlext Noel, Director of Planning and Documentation.

For his part, Hedruch Pierre led the training in sign language, an area that aroused great interest among the participants, eager to assimilate the basic concepts. In order to facilitate learning, Hedruch organized practical sessions with the executives of the various institutions present.

Genard Joseph, the Secretary of State for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities, stressed that the institution he heads could not obtain satisfactory results for persons with disabilities in the country without the participation of all sectors of national life. He specified that this training in sign language aims to break down the communication barriers between deaf people and society, in order to prevent them from becoming victims of certain police officers who, too often, do not know how to go about it due to a communication barrier.
