iciHaiti - 266th anniversary of Dessalines : Message from the Consul of Santiago (Dom. Rep.) 22/09/2024 09:08:47 Message from Sherline Celiscar : "On this Friday, September 20, 2024, the entire country pays tribute to Jean-Jacques Dessalines. This great man, as Father of the Nation and architect of freedom, is celebrated for his essential role in the struggle for independence, freedom, and the emancipation of Haitians and the black race. Jean-Jacques Dessalines, born on September 20, 1758, remains in the history of the Haitian Nation an expression of bravery, courage, perseverance and resistance to oppression. Before 1804, the slave, who came from Africa, was not a subject of law, he was treated like a commodity. But with the independence proclaimed on January 1st, 1804, Dessalines posed the negation of colonialism and slavery, and made freedom and equality essential conditions for the existence of every human being without distinction of color. Moreover, with this act, he not only laid, through the Imperial Constitution of 1805, the foundation of the Haitian being 'No one is worthy of being Haitian, if he is not a good father, a good son, a good husband and above all a good soldier' and 'Haitian citizens are brothers among themselves', but also a source of inspiration for all oppressed peoples, and for all struggles for freedom and respect for human rights. Indeed, 24 hours of a day cannot be enough to translate the immensity and value of the legacy of Jean-Jacques Dessalines for Haitians in particular, and for humanity in general. To mark this solemn day, in the face of this crisis that our country is going through, the Consulate General of Haiti in Santiago in the Dominican Republic calls on every Haitian, particularly those living in its Jurisdiction, according to the wish of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, to draw on the roots of the foundations of themselves and with the aim of reaching out to others, from within and without, 'to be themselves as completely as possible' with a view to initiating a real compromise for economic and social progress in a context of solidarity and international cooperation. [...] On behalf of the Haitian Government, and on my own behalf, Sherline Celiscar, Acting Chief of Post, the Consulate General of Haiti in Santiago in the Dominican Republic invites all Haitians to humbly bow before the memory of this great man and as he so aptly said: 'We dared to be free, let us dare to be free by ourselves and for ourselves'" IH/ iciHaiti
