iciHaiti - Delmas 33 : Minister Suzan alongside female prisoners
Marie Françoise Suzan, Minister for the Status of Women and Women's Rights, at the head of a delegation, visited women and girls incarcerated at the Delmas 33 civil prison this week.

This visit reflects the importance given by the transitional government to women's health in general, and to those in vulnerable situations in particular.

A series of activities were carried out during the day to support the 152 detainees (140 women and 12 minors) crammed into cells at the Centre for the Rehabilitation of Minors in Conflict with the Law (CERMICOL), whose inmate numbers far exceed the Centre's capacity.

During her visit, Minister Suzan stated "I am aware that the conditions in which you are living are not good, they are contrary to standards. This is why I am committed to doing everything possible to support you in this difficult impasse. I understand the reality and I am deeply saddened by it."

A mobile clinic was set up and coordinated by a medical team composed of internists, gynecologists, nurses and pharmacists. The latter provided health care to the detainees. After consultation, medications were distributed free of charge. Hygiene kits and hot meals were also given to the women and girls.

Lawyers from the Port-au-Prince Bar Association accompanied the delegation to review the files and provide legal assistance to those who do not have a lawyer. "You can count on the Government of which I am a part to have the right to a fair trial. It is unacceptable that women and girls spend fifteen years in prison for minor offenses," the Minister lamented.
