iciHaiti - DR : Nearly 12,500 Haitian patients treated in 7 months at Doctor Teófilo Hernández hospital (El Seibo)
In 7 months, from January to July 2021, 46,168 patients were treated at Doctor Teófilo Hernández Hospital (El Seibo, Dominican Republic) including 12,446 patients of all ages (26.9%) of Haitian origin according to statistical data from the hospital.

Margarita Chovet, Director of the hospital indicated that most Haitian patients who came to this health center did not have an identity document. "On a daily basis, we see more Haitian nationals in the hospital; it's a full house."

She stressed that the hospital tries to provide the corresponding service to each patient without distinction, as long as the patient needs one of the specialties available at the hospital. She said that Haitian patients flocked to gynecology, surgery, pediatrics, cardiology, in addition to emergency services...

Margarita Chovet explained that this situation was very worrying and she asks that the services of all Primary Care Units (UNAP) be activated so that these entities refer Haitian patients, instead of going to the hospital without any referral nor document.
