iciHaiti - France : Father Maurice Piquard receives the Legion of Honor 01/07/2018 09:03:15 A student of theology in France, Maurice Piquard arrived in Haiti in 1970 as a trainee in Bassin Bleu, where he first taught in home economics centers that he himself set up. In addition to a fruitful experience of planting bananas with his students, he has initiated a movement of clearing and development of parochial lands transformed into areas of cultivation and grazing, which will extend to all localities of the commune. Ordained priest in 1974 in Port-de-Paix for the diocese of the Northwest, Maurice Piquard was successively director of four parishes (Bassin Bleu, Jean Rabel, St-Montfort in Port-de-Paix and Turtle Island) before to become Chancellor of the diocese of Port-de-Paix. Along the long way, he led many social projects, such as building schools, bread ovens and family cisterns. He also initiated the annual tuition fees support for some twenty deserving students from needy families. In 2002, Father Piquard joined Port-au-Prince. Responsible for the care of a slum, he organizes a local Sunday service for nearly 200 faithful and supports the management of the "Providence" school where a hundred children are welcomed free of charge in kindergarten, thanks to sponsorships and donations. With the generosity of his network in France, Father Piquard rescued hundreds of families affected by the earthquake of 2010 but also following the passage of Hurricane Matthew in October 2016. By rewarding Father Piquard, France wished to pay tribute to its commitment to social pastoral work with the most disadvantaged Haitian communities but also and above all, to reward its precious action in the field of education and for the development of Haiti.
