iciHaiti - Politic : Minister Jean Jean calls for solidarity from UN members in favor of Haitian women
On Monday, March 17, 2025, Pedrica Saint Jean, Minister for the Status of Women and Women's Rights, spoke at the United Nations during the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) (March 10-21, 2025) and called for solidarity from UN members to raise their voices in support of Haitian women.

In her speech, which focused on the State's structural actions in six of the 12 critical areas prioritized by Haiti and the demands of Haitian women, she described the grim reality facing women and girls in Haiti while presenting the considerable progress made by the Haitian government in the area of women's rights.

Speech by Minister Jean Jean :

"[...] Mr. President,

The Haitian Government, to which I belong, is well aware of the progress made towards achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women worldwide, as called for in the Beijing Platform for Action. The Haitian State has adopted the Gender Equality Policy 2014-2034 and a 2014-2020 Action Plan. This Policy addresses six of the 12 critical areas prioritized within the Platform for Action.

Through this Policy, the State commits to

1 - Equal rights and fair justice between women and men;

2 - Non-sexist education and egalitarian models;

3 - Access to sexual and reproductive health while respecting the human dignity of women;

4 - The elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls;

5 - Economic equality and equal access to employment for women and men;

6 - Equal political participation of women and men in decision-making bodies.

Haiti aims to continue its path toward a more just and egalitarian society over a relatively long period of time.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The insecurity caused by armed gangs is growing daily. Despite the security measures taken by the Government, through the Haitian National Police and the Haitian Armed Forces, with the support of the Multinational Security Support Mission, these armed gangs continue their attacks against the civilian population, and the main victims are women and girls. They burn babies, lynch girls and women, and massacre men and boys.

In response to this tragedy, the Government has developed a series of strategic programs to counter this security crisis, which is leading to the country's collapse. Also, the Ministry for the Status of Women and Women's Rights, working with other state institutions, is working to ensure that displaced women and survivors of violence against women receive psychosocial support through women's organizations and/or civil society, based on a partnership developed between my Ministry and these service institutions.

Another Ministry project, 'Socioeconomic Integration of Unmarried Mothers and Women in the Country's Seven Geographic Departments', aims to promote the socioeconomic empowerment of women through a Public Treasury fund. The objective is to contribute to improving the socioeconomic situation of Haitian women and unmarried mothers.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and encourage your solidarity with the cause of Haitian women and the Haitian people in general, as well as with African women, and to express our deep gratitude to the countries friendly to the Republic of Haiti that are joining our security forces by sending troops to restore order and security in the city. The Haitian population in general, and women in particular, are ready to participate in the restoration of peace. In this regard, the Ministry for the Status of Women and Women's Rights is pleased to announce the development and implementation of the first National Action Plan relating to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, Women, Peace, and Security, with the support of UN Women in Haiti and the French Development Agency (AFD). This action plan will continue to strengthen the capacity of women to become true guardians and agents of peace.

Finally, I would like to ask you, ladies and gentlemen, members of the international community, to continue to strengthen your solidarity with the Republic of Haiti. The challenges facing the Haitian state are numerous in the areas of gender equality and women's empowerment. In this current context of pervasive insecurity, jeopardizing social peace, I call on you, the women of the CSW, members of the United Nations, like Haiti, to raise your voices in support of Haitian women who die every day, who suffer in body and soul as they witness the daily murder of their husbands and children. Haiti needs your solidarity more than ever.

Thank you for your attention."
