iciHaiti - Economy : Digicel encourages digital entrepreneurship
World Social Media Day is celebrated annually on June 30, and this year Digicel Haitihosts local social media entrepreneurs and influencers Carel Pedre, Plezikanaval founder and radio host of Chokarella; Francisco Bellevue, make-up artist; CamiseDélia otherwise known under the nickname of Shishie the comedian, to share what social media has done for them, their business and personal brand.

"There is a lot of focus on the negative side of social media, the trolling, tearing people down, fear of missing out and so on, but there is also a lot of good that has come about as a result of social media. People have built businesses and brands resulting in opportunities for new businesses and industries. As a total communications and entertainment provider we have been at the forefront witnessing it all," said Gertrude Buly Freda the Public Relations Manager of Digicel.

Carel Pedre is a radio and television personality in Haiti. A well-known social media influencer and journalist, he is also a director and producer. As the host of Chokarella, a popular morning show broadcast on Radio One, his Instagram account has more than 228,000 subscribers. He says social networks have contributed greatly to his success. He explains "I use social networks a lot and I always try to find the best way to integrate them not only in my everyday life, but also in my professional life. Without the social media, I would have made a local success but they have definitely allowed me to reach a larger audience and make a global success. Social media have also allowed me to better know my audience. "

Francisco Le Maquilleur, whose real name is Francisco Bellevue, is the official make-up artist of Miss Haiti since 2015. For him, make-up was first of all a spare wheel, then, over the years, it became his love and daily passion. "Social Media networks have contributed a lot to my evolution in this field, because positive reviews encourage me and the negative ones give me even more motivation to offer the best of myself in my next makeup sessions," he said.

Camise Délia says that social media networks are the channels that have fostered the creation of the humorous character called Shishie. "I made a short video that I shared on my Facebook page, which at the time did not have many followers. But the video was viral. Till then, my followers kept asking for more."

With a fundamental belief in the concept of broadband for all, Digicel bridges the digital divide by empowering people to develop their online real estate. Through social media the world has become more connected, with businesses and individuals alike leveraging the potential for publicity and the opportunities to engage directly with customers making business personal.
