iciHaïti - Frankétienne : Tribute from the Permanent Delegation of Haiti to UNESCO
"The Permanent Delegation of Haiti to UNESCO learned with great sadness of the death of Frankétienne, an emblematic figure of Haitian culture and world literature, on February 20, 2025. Born on April 12, 1936 in Ravine-Sèche, in the commune of Saint-Marc, Haiti, Frankétienne, whose real name was Jean-Pierre Basilic Dantor Franck Etienne d'Argent, was a multi-talented artist: painter, poet, novelist, musician, actor, playwright and educator. He is recognized as one of the most prolific personalities in Haitian literature.

First holder of the Ministry of Culture of Haiti under the presidency of Leslie François Manigat in 1988, he was appointed Ambassador of Culture by the Haitian Government in 2016 and Artist for Peace of UNESCO in 2010. Frankérienne devoted his life to the promotion of Haitian culture and the values defended by the Organization. His literary and artistic legacy, of exceptional richness, will continue to mark several generations. Through his multifaceted work and his unwavering commitment, he was able to shine the spotlight on the identity and resilience of the Haitian people on a global scale.

Frankétienne left an indelible mark on Haitian and universal literature, notably with his masterpiece "Dézafi", the first novel written in Haitian Creole, which remains an act of cultural resistance. His other works, such as "Mûr à crever" "Ultravocal" and "Les Métamorphoses de l'oiseau schizophone", testify to his literary audacity and his founding role in the spiralist movement, merging poetry, theater and novel in an innovative dynamic.

More than a writer, Frankétienne was a scout, a transmitter of memory and dreams. His commitment to the preservation of cultural diversity and the transmission of knowledge touched all those who had the privilege of meeting him. His legacy will continue to inspire and uphold the values of Peace and culture dear to UNESCO.

In this time of mourning, the Permanent Delegation of Haiti to UNESCO expresses its deep sadness and extends its most sincere condolences to Frankétienne's family, his loved ones and all those touched by his creative genius. May his work remain an inexhaustible source of light and hope !"
