iciHaiti - Social : The Consul General of Haiti in Chicago, honored
At the 11th Annual Gala Recognition of the DuSable Heritage Association the Consul General of Haiti in Chicago, Lesly Condé was honored by the Association for his contribution to recognize the mulatto Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable, born in Saint-Marc in the French colony of Santo Domingo between 1745 and 1750, as founder of the city of Chicago.

Speech of the Consul Lesly Condé :
"Distinguished friends of DuSable,
Distinguished friends of Haiti,
Dear compatriots,
Frè m ak sè m yo

DuSable Heritage Association's Eleventh Annual Awards Gala brings us together one more time. This is a precious opportunity to show support for an organization that has been working tirelessly in order to obtain recognition for a colorful part of Chicago's history, and for the courageous and resourceful man who made it all happen. It is a distinct pleasure to greet you all on behalf of the Consulate General of Haiti in Chicago.

First and foremost, let me thank DuSable Heritage Association,
particularly Dr. Serge Pierre-Louis, for having invited me to be part of this Eleventh Annual Awards Gala, and chosen me as this year's honoree.

With much humility, gratitude and enthusiasm, I accept this distinction on behalf of the Consulate General of Haiti in Chicago and the Chicago Haitian Community. I always thought that this struggle to pull Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable out of relative darkness was a worthwhile one. I also firmly believe that the Consulate General of Haiti in Chicago has a role to play since the man whose achievements are being promoted is a son of our native land. In this endeavor, DuSable Heritage Association and the Consulate General of Haiti in Chicago are natural allies. Collaborating with Dr. Serge Pierre-Louis and DuSable Heritage Association has always been a pleasant experience. This award is icing on the proverbial cake. Moreover, coming from an organization as prestigious and hard working as DuSable Heritage Association, it constitutes one of the brightest highlights of my career.

Today, Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable is much more visible in Chicago than he was a decade ago. This is due, without a doubt, to the relentless efforts of DuSable Heritage Association and all the other organizations that have been working towards the same goal. However, we cannot afford to become complacent because Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable is far from receiving the kind of recognition he deserves as founder of the city of Chicago. DuSable Heritage Association is joining other organizations in pressuring the authorities into reviving the DuSable Park project. The park will showcase the city's founder in a fitting manner. There should be no doubt as to who Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable was, and where he came from.

In closing, I want to thank DuSable Heritage Association once more for having made me part of the Eleventh Annual Awards Gala in such a memorable way. I also thank each and everyone of you for supporting the organization and its goal. Thanks to your faithful support, much progress has been achieved, and everything is possible.

I thank you very much for your attention!

Lesly Condé
Consul Général"
