iciHaiti - Cap Haitien : Cleaning operation at the Pont-Neuf market
Since January 10, 2025, a vast cleaning operation has begun at the Pont-Neuf market and its surroundings, orchestrated by the Municipal Commission of Cap-Haïtien as part of the LAVIL project https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-41315-haiti-economy-launch-of-the-together-let-s-change-the-city-program.html , with the support of Cities Alliance and its partners.

To carry out this mission, no fewer than 30 local workers, including 16 women and 14 men, were recruited through the Solid Waste Management Support Committee (CAGDS). These agents, who work from Monday to Saturday, are supervised by a team made up of three inspectors and a supervisor from the City Hall's road service.

In addition, the teams do not just clean. They receive prior training on waste management, leadership and financial management. This educational component, which also includes representatives of the merchants' association, aims to strengthen local skills and ensure the sustainability of the results obtained.

In addition to clearing the premises of waste, particular attention is paid to selective sorting. The recovered plastics will be intended for recycling, while plans are underway to launch an organic waste composting project. As for non-recyclable residues, they are sent to the municipal landfill thanks to the logistical support of the project.

The operation highlights the importance of a collective commitment between institutions, technical partners and the local population. "The cleanliness of a city depends as much on the infrastructure put in place as on the civic behavior of the inhabitants," emphasizes Guerlin Siffra, Director of collective equipment and works of the Municipality.
