iciHaiti - Politic : Greece shares a unique and historical bond with Haiti
At a special session of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on children in Haiti, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations, highlighted his country’s efforts to work closely with UNICEF, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and neighboring countries to assist Haiti during this critical time.

Furthermore, Greece reaffirmed its commitment to prioritizing Haiti on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council, with a focus on supporting the stability, security and political transition of the Caribbean nation.

"Haiti is a country geographically distant from Greece, but we share a unique and historic bond," said UN Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris [...] Haiti was the first nation to recognise Greece’s War of Independence in 1822, That year, Haitian President Jean-Pierre Boyer sent a letter to a committee of Greeks in Paris, extending warm wishes for the success of the Greek struggle, despite the financial challenges faced by Haiti, which made any direct support impossible.

When Greece begins its rotating Presidency of the UN Security Council (May 2025), this new role will provide Greece with greater opportunities to contribute to Haiti’s political transition and recovery. Greece’s continued commitment to Haiti underscores not only a dedication to humanitarian efforts, but also a deep respect for the historical ties between the two countries.
