iciHaiti - 221st Independence Day : Message from the Consulate of Haiti in Montreal
Wednesday, January 1st, 2024, as part of the celebration of the 221st anniversary of Haiti's independence, Guerline Frédéric, Head of Post of the Consulate General of Haiti in Montreal delivered a message from which we share the main excerpts

Message from Guerline Frédéric :

"Dear compatriots, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Custom always requires on this date to formulate, or even exchange, New Year's greetings between relatives, friends, partners, colleagues, and family. Notwithstanding this immemorial tradition, for us Haitians, January 1st is more than that; because this date is both history and memory. It is history on the one hand, because it expresses and testifies to the birth of a new Nation, sovereignly free and independent following a long and difficult battle for dignity and respect for human rights, whatever the color of its skin.

On the other hand, it is memory, because it reminds us of the sacrifices of our ancestors so that today the “Joumou soup” is no longer the business of a few privileged white racists and slave owners.

Dear compatriots,
Today and once again, we are at the crossroads of our humanity and our patriotism.

We are at the crossroads of our humanity, because the time has come to tell ourselves, Haitians, that we can no longer be the laughing stock of the world.

We are at the crossroads of our patriotism, because the time for surpassing oneself for the collective and national interest has come. So, it is high time for us to rebuild our beloved Haiti.

Under the presidency of the Provisional Presidential Council, and under the aegis of the Consensus Government; It is time to take on the major national challenges of security and the modernization of our republican institutions that can promote a democratic rule of law. In this sense, it must be admitted that the installation of the Provisional Electoral Council is a considerable step.

Dear compatriots,
We at the consulate are aware of how much you carry Haiti in your aching hearts and in your entrails torn apart by the situation in which the country has been stuck for a very long time. Moreover, your transfers and your various acts of solidarity are the CERTAINTY of this, as if to paraphrase the excellent Haitian poet Georges Castera in 'L’encre est ma demeure': 'vous aimez Haïti comme une maison qui brûle'.
[...]
Dear compatriots,
As the oldest country of freedom for all, Haiti is on the border between yesterday’s upheavals and today’s opportunities for modernization and progress for all.

We are all witnesses to the time of agony. So each of us should find in our adage “strength in unity”, the strength to hope and believe that we can act together in dignity and for progress.

Happy New Year 2025 to all,
Long live the Haitian diaspora in Quebec
Long live Quebec
Long live the Republic of Haiti

Guerline Frédéric
Head of Post of the Consulate General of Haiti in Montreal."
