iciHaiti - Varreux : Capsizing of the Maelys II boat, the explanations
Terminal Varreux expresses its deep regret following the accident that occurred on Monday, December 23, 2024, involving the cabotage vessel Le Maelys II (Year : 1970, Tonnage: 2,401 tons, Length: 75 m) of the company JP Haiti trans.

The vessel was carrying out cabotage operations between the Grand Sud and Port-au-Prince. The accident occurred during the loading of trucks, carried out by the crew.

While the vessel was at the ramp dedicated to cabotage operations, a bad maneuver by a truck inside the hold caused a strong imbalance, resulting in a list to port.

The vessel will be righted and reconditioned without delay by its owner...

For the moment, it is half-submerged, outside the international docks area.

This unfortunate accident has no impact on the docking of foreign-flagged vessels or on the port's international operations.

However, due to this event, cabotage operations are temporarily suspended, although the supply of the southern peninsula remains a priority.

We express our deep gratitude to the courageous teams of the Haitian Coast Guard, the APN, as well as the employees of the Varreux Terminal for their rapid and efficient assistance.

This deplorable accident unfortunately resulted in loss of human life.

The Varreux Terminal, its staff and collaborators extend their sincere condolences to the victims' families.
