iciHaïti - Obituary : Death of feminist activist Marie Carmelle Lafontant
Marie Françoise Suzan, the Minister for Women's Affairs, learned with great sadness the sad news of the death of Mrs. Marie Carmelle Lafontant, at the age of 94.

A feminist activist and career educator, Marie Carmelle Lafontant devoted her life to education and the promotion of women's rights in Haiti. A member of the Women's League for Social Action founded in 1934, she became involved at a very young age alongside illustrious Haitian women for the recognition and respect of women's rights and the right to education for girls. Founder of the Haitian Center for Research and Promotion of Women, she was able to train, with passion, several generations of young girls with a view to their full emancipation.

Marie Carmelle Lafontant participated in several international missions for the integration of the principle of equality between women and men and witnessed various UN declarations on non-discrimination against women.

"Living heritage, her time at the Ministry for the Status of Women was marked by her wise advice to advance the cause of women.

"Even at a very advanced age, she remained dynamic and full of energy, showing extraordinary passion and determination.

"The Haitian feminist movement, the country has just lost one of its greatest educators and defenders. A departure that will undoubtedly leave a great void in the sector. However, posterity will always remember her name thanks to her immensely productive work.

"The Ministry for the Status of Women and Women's Rights (MCFDF) mourns the departure of an exceptional woman.

In this painful circumstance, Minister Suzan extends her most sincere condolences to the family members, friends and loved ones grieving this loss.

Rest in Peace Great Lady !"
