iciHaiti - Insecurity : Toussaint Louverture Airport remains vulnerable
Security work on the perimeter of Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Haiti has temporarily come to a halt. Project managers for the security and demolition of buildings near the airport fence explained that 80 high-rise houses overlooking the runway have still not been demolished. "We are still far from the final phase of demolition of houses located within the perimeter of the international airport to secure the area against possible attacks by armed groups," confirmed Wilcain Noël, program manager.

eIn addition to these 80 high-rise houses, 193 other small houses must also be demolished, but there is a delay due to the slow arrival of checks to compensate the owners," Wilcain Noël lamented.

He warned that the airport perimeter is still not safe from threats from armed gangs as long as these houses are not destroyed, since more than a month ago members of the Drouillard gang fired on the airport runway… warning "At any time, gang members could prevent the proper functioning of the airport facility."

Concerning the expansion of the runway, the construction of the ring road to secure the airport and the police installations to monitor the perimeter, remain embryonic projects that are not moving forward, Noël lamented.
