iciHaiti - Cinema : «Pepe Mujica, Nelson Mandela et Haïti», by Haitian director and filmmaker Arnold Antonin
Last week, the Ginger room of the Karibe Hotel was packed to attend the screening of the documentary "Pepe Mujica, Nelson Mandela et Haïti", by Haitian director and filmmaker Arnold Antonin.

Held under the aegis of the UNESCO office in Haiti, this screening allowed spectators to discover or rediscover the former President of Uruguay (2010 to 2015) "Pepe Mujica", whose political life and philosophy of life are still a source of inspiration.

Born in 1935, José Mujica (89 years old), affectionately nicknamed "Pépé Mujica" spent 14 years of his life in prison, including 2 in a well. Released, he successfully led his party to electoral victory in 2010. Having become President at the age of 75, "Pepe Mujica" nicknamed "President of the poor" transformed Uruguay into a vanguard of social policies advocating an education based on values and not on wealth. In this 60-minute documentary, he presents his vision of power, the management of public affairs and his philosophy of life, as well as the history of Uruguay and his imprisonment.

The screening, which was held in a solemn but also friendly setting, attracted a distinguished audience composed of Transitional Presidential Advisors, Government Ministers, Directors General, Public Administration Executives, the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti and UN Resident Coordinator in Haiti, the President of the Port-au-Prince Bar Association, judges, Ambassadors and consuls accredited to Haiti, Heads of United Nations agencies in Haiti, as well as literary and cultural figures.

Representatives of human rights organizations and Haitian civil society were also present, emphasizing the importance and scope of the film in the current socio-political context. The audience had the opportunity to discover an in-depth look at the lives and struggles of two iconic figures "Pepe Mujica and Nelson Mandela" whose leaderships continue to embody the prototype of sober, transformative and inspiring governance.

The atmosphere in the room was filled with emotion, respect and commitment. The discussions that followed the screening with director and filmmaker Arnold Antonin allowed us to re-situate the debate on the Haitian context. The reactions were varied, ranging from emotion to inspiration, illustrating the impact of these leaders on the struggles for justice and freedom on a global scale.
