iciHaiti - UN : BINUH mandate unanimously extended for one year
Friday July 12, 2024, the Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2743 (2024), which extends for an additional year, until July 15, 2025, the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH).

Through this text, submitted by Ecuador and the United States, the Council reaffirms the need for all Haitian stakeholders to continue, particularly with the support of BINUH, to lead a political process led and controlled by Haitians which allows the holding of free and fair presidential and legislative elections, with the participation of women, youth, civil society and other relevant stakeholders.

The text specifies that the maximum strength of the BINUH group responsible for issues relating to the police and prison services will remain set at 70 civilians and agents on secondment, responsible for strengthening strategic support for the training and investigation resources of the Haitian National Police (PNH). At the same time, the BINUH is encouraged to continue to carry out other tasks already falling within its mandate, particularly in the areas of consultative support to the PNH, good governance, justice, the fight against violence arms and illicit financial flows, port and border management and the provision of human rights information to advance disarmament, demobilization, dismantling of gangs and the reintegration of gang members through non-military approaches.

Finally, resolution 2743 (2024) highlights the importance of coordination between BINUH, the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS), the Haitian authorities and other international and regional partners, in order to ensure complementarity and to optimize international support for the PNH.
