iciHaiti - Dominican Rep. : More than 300,000 Haitians repatriated to Haiti
Venancio Alcántara, Director of the General Directorate of Migration (DGM), declared that his institution had repatriated around 300,000 Haitians in an irregular migratory situation since taking office in August 2022. Nearly 500,00 Haitians (including “voluntary departures ") returned to Haiti during the first mandate of Luis Abinader adding "The nationalities are diverse because we expel all people in an irregular migratory situation in the country, but the greatest number are Haitians"

"I have the impression that there has been an increase in illegal entry, but it is difficult to determine because our border still has too many illegal access points” furthermore he indicated “we have a small problem for immigration because Haitians are hiding or Dominican citizens are hiding them at home..."

Alcántara assured that the processes of banning people from remaining in the territory, carried out by the Immigration Directorate, comply with the provisions of Law 275-04, respect for human rights and international standards including the Dominican Republic. is a signatory. He indicated that the Amnesty International accusations last April https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-42040-haiti-justiceamnesty-international-urges-the-dom-rep-to-put-an-end-to-its-racist-policies.html were inconsiderate and denied that foreigners had been mistreated.

Furthermore, the DGM announced that 5 new "administrative detention centers" were being built in the country (Santiago, Dajabón, Elías Piña, Jimaní and Benerito, in Higüey) to receive illegal migrants for processing before their repatriation to their country of origin.

Earlier this week Venancio Alcántara visited the Center located in Santiago, which is in its final phase. Venancio Alcántara highlighted "Each of these centers is adapted to guarantee cleanliness, comfort, security and tranquility."
