The Ministry of Culture pays a vibrant tribute to the illustrious Haitian painter Luce Turnier, considered one of the great figures of Haitian painting of the 20th century. Born in Jacmel, Luce Turnier embodies resilience and patience. She managed to establish herself as a female artist despite the pitfalls that obstructed her path.

February 24, 2024 commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of this great figure of Haitian culture. Luce Turnier was very interested in abstract painting and collage. Through her painting, she revealed the anatomy of women, a way of challenging the moral values of her time. His painting underwent a great evolution from 1957, giving great notoriety both nationally and internationally to his work.

On this memorable date, the Ministry salutes the bravery and extraordinary journey of Luce Turnier. After joining the Art Center in October 1944, Luce Turnier became one of the rare women to be a founding member of this institution. Luce Turnier died in Paris on April 22, 1994 at the age of 70 from generalized cancer. But his artistic works still illuminate the eyes and hearts of all Haitians.
