iciHaiti - Crisis : Dominican Chancellor Alvarez will speak about Haiti at the UN
This Thursday, January 25, the United Nations Security Council will hold an open briefing, followed by private consultations, on Haiti. The Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), María Isabel Salvador, is expected to provide an update on recent developments in the country and the latest report of the Secretary-General https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-41507-haiti-flash-staggering-and-worsening-level-of-gang-violence-nearly-5-000-haitians-killed-in-2023.html

On the other hand, a press release from the Dominican Chancellery specifies that during this session, Roberto Álvarez the Dominican Minister of Foreign Affairs should insist on the materialization of the Security Council resolution, approved on October 2nd, 2023, which authorizes the deployment of a multinational force in Haiti, led by Kenya, to help the Haitian police restore security and create the conditions necessary for elections to be held.

Álvarez has already warned the Council that the situation of violence and insecurity in Haiti "threatens not only the Haitian people, but also the security of the Dominican Republic."

This new session will be held in accordance with Security Council resolution 2645, which establishes that the issue related to the crisis in Haiti be debated within this body every three months or when a member requests a special meeting.
