iciHaiti - 2010 earthquake : Message of tribute from Agerca
On January 12, 2024, the Alliance for Risk Management and Business Continuity (AGERCA) paid tribute to the victims of the terrible earthquake of January 12, 2010 which left more than 220,000 dead.

Message from ARGERCA :
“Exactly 14 years ago, on January 12, 2010, Haiti was hit by one of the deadliest and most devastating earthquakes in the world, leaving behind a landscape of destruction and a people in mourning. Today we come together to commemorate this tragedy, honor the victims and bear witness to the resilience of the Haitian people in the face of adversity.

This earthquake, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, occurred at 4:53 p.m. local time. Its epicenter was located approximately 25 km from Port-au-Prince, the country's capital. It left more than 220,000 dead, 300,000 injured and 1.3 million homeless, according to a report established by the Haitian government.

Despite the considerable efforts made to rebuild and support the affected communities, this tragedy has left visible after-effects within the Port-au-Prince population as if to remind us of our exposure and vulnerability to this hazard.

Certainly capacities have been strengthened in risk reduction, particularly in prevention through campaigns to raise awareness among the population on the behaviors to adopt before, during and after an earthquake. However, challenges remain, and the commemoration of this anniversary is also an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to supporting all initiatives aimed at the sustainable development of Haiti.

We call on the private sector, civil society, political actors and the international community to continue to support Haiti in its journey towards stability and resilience.

On this day of remembrance, let us unite our prayers for all the dead and victims of this tragic day but also those who suffer every day !"
