iciHaiti - Vertières 220th : «An example and a model...»
On this 220th anniversary of the Battle of Vertières, the Ambassador of Haiti in Madrid (Spain) Guy G. Lamothe delivered a message that we invite you to discover.

Message from Ambassador Guy G. Lamothe :

"220 years ago, the colony of Saint-Domingue was the scene, on the day of November 18, 1803, of a historic event without precedent in the annals of universal history. It was the resounding victory of the indigenous army, made up mainly of former black slaves, reducing Napoleon Bonaparte's French expeditionary forces to total capitulation. This fact officially gave rise to the independence of Haiti on January 1st, 1804.

From now on the colonial, slave and segregationist order was abolished, a new era was established, that of a country and a people enjoying fullness, freedom and sovereignty.

By objectively revisiting this epic, one thing is obvious: the battle of Vertières on November 18, 1803 is an example and a model. An example to be praised because of its tenets of spirit of unity, understanding and determination to confront the common enemy. A model to follow in its outcomes that bring hope for a change in beings and things. Indeed, in view of the current crisis plaguing Haiti, the symbolism of Vertières is an imperative to take into account beforehand for the viable and sustainable implementation of the solutions to be recommended.

As in Vertières, and like our braves, we must rise, with courage and tenacity, to attack the centuries-old ramparts which increasingly atrophy our present and distance us from the framework of living together, of better being and well-being.

On the occasion of the 220th anniversary of this glorious fact, may we all, daughters and sons of Haiti, appropriate the Spirit of Vertières, as an example and model, so that tomorrow will not be like Today."
