iciHaiti - History: 274 years of Port-au-Prince (June 3, 1749 - June 13, 2023)
"[...] a safe bay, protected by high mountains and an islet whose shape evokes that of certain monsters of the legends of the sea.
It first served as a haven for the sails that the storm was chasing in the channel of the wind.

[...] but the immense bay that gently hugs its protective island is not always just beauty. It was not until 1738 that man saw there the ideal place for the organization and centralization of his conquests. It was then that the shape of a city took shape in this place. In spite of unparalleled geographical advantages, the pleasantness of its particular topography and its easy and rich vegetation, Port-au-Prince remained for a long time a rather poor city in appearance. [...]"

The great movement of improvement and creation determined by the preparations for the exhibition allow us to hope that in a short time Port-au-Prince, which is a city of very rare charm, will be one of the most exciting capitals of the new world.

Excerpts from the text "Foundation of Port-au-Prince" published in the catalog of the international exhibition of the bicentenary of the city of Port-au-Prince in 1949
