iciHaiti - Source Matelas : Massive displacement of the population
Since the past weekend, the northern entrance to Port-au-Prince has been experiencing a situation of tension following the assaults of gangs that have already established themselves in Canaan and in the locality of Source Matelas.

The situation escalated on Sunday April 23, 2023, when heavy gunfire sowed panic among the population. According to information obtained from local authorities, the armed bandits want to gain ground by approaching the town of Cabaret.

Between April 19 and 23, according to the latest reports from local civil protection structures, around twenty houses were burned down, around forty people were murdered in Cabaret and several thousand people, including pregnant women and children in at an early age, to escape the violence of these armed men, took refuge in the neighboring towns. Given the gravity and volatility of the situation, the number of displaced people is expected to gradually increase.

Present on the ground, the local civil protection coordinations mobilized from the start of this new crisis to provide support to the victims. To respond to accommodation problems and health needs, the local civil protection coordination has activated temporary shelters which are already occupied by a dozen families.

In addition, on Monday April 24, the General Directorate of Civil Protection, in collaboration with the World Organization for Migration (IOM), with the logistical support of United Nations agencies, helicoptered a first batch of basic necessities (wool blankets, hygiene kits, kitchen kits and other non-food items). These products were given to the local authorities and the municipal civil protection committees of Cabaret and Arcahaie to provide the populations of these two localities with a humanitarian response to the difficult situation in which they find themselves.

Other similar operations are being prepared and Civil Protection remains mobilized.
