iciHaiti - Pine forest: More than 150 hectares destroyed by fire in 8 days 10/03/2023 09:53:48
The pine forest, located at more than 2,000 meters above sea level in the La Selle massif, has been the victim in recent weeks of several voluntary fires which have already destroyed 150 hectares in 8 days... for lack of effective means to fight against forest fires.
"This year is the first time in my life that the pine forest has been hit by so many fires," laments Jean Robert Sultan, Project Director of the Reforestation through Education Foundation.
Let's recall that in 2021, it was estimated that there were only about 12,000 of the 32,000 hectares of the Pine Forest, natural heritage of Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35184-haiti-environment-ecovert-haiti-condemns-the-inaction-and-irresponsibility-of-the-government.html
For Sultan there is no doubt that these fires are of criminal origins, he recalls that everyone knows that certain unscrupulous individuals set fire to portions of this protected area to illegally recover new land, in order to practice crops, market gardeners, stressing that an investigation is underway to find the culprits.
