iciHaiti - PAHO : Cholera cases are probably much higher than reported figures
Wednesday, October 12 during a press briefing, Dr. Carissa F. Etienne Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) declared "The resurgence of cholera in Haiti is a reminder of the rapid spread of diseases [...] We don't have time to recover and prepare between two health crises [...] After more than three years (without any cases), Haiti reported a cholera epidemic in early October, when the country was on the verge of be declared free of this disease."

As of October 10, the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) has confirmed 32 cases, 18 deaths, 266 suspected cases and 215 hospitalized cases in the metropolitan area.

"Cholera arrived in a context of serious social and political unrest," Dr. Etienne stressed, "which complicates efforts to provide humanitarian aid and respond to the epidemic," adding that cases are likely to be high outnumbered by reported figures, as escalating street violence and criminal activity limits access to disease-affected areas...

PAHO is supporting the Haitian authorities and international partners in setting up cholera treatment centers. The Organization has donated two tons of medical supplies and is helping the MSPP in its surveillance and case management efforts "We are also ready to help the government to quickly access vaccine supplies" concluded the Director of the OPS.
