On Wednesday July 27, 2022, high tension reigned at the National Penitentiary when prisoners managed to forcefully leave their cells and go out into the courtyard to protest against the poor conditions of detention. Some have not been able to wash or eat for 3 days and they are thirsty because they lack water, others are sick and do not receive any treatment...
Let's recall that in the past, detainees died at the National Penitentiary https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-19870-haiti-flash-new-wave-of-deaths-at-the-national-penitentiary.html due to illness contagious, unsanitary cells (lack of toilet), lack of food, and water, sleep among others... https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-20013-haiti-flash-nightmare-at-the-national-penitentiary.html
To regain control of the situation and force the detainees back to their cells, the guards used tear gas and live ammunition. It is unclear whether there were any injuries or deaths.
Marie Yolène Gilles of the "Fondasyon Je Klere" (FJKL) is issuing a cry of alarm in the face of this situation before a tragedy occurs.
