iciHaiti - Rescue : 27 Haitians rescued on a desert island in Puerto Rico 23/06/2022 11:22:29
The rescue operation took place over two daysafter the Coast Guard said it detected an illegal smuggling boat heading away from Monito Island. Officials said they arrested three illegal smugglers and rescued 9 of the 27 Haitians stranded on the island who jumped into the water upon seeing the coast guard arrive. Unfavorable sea conditions prevented rescuing the remaining Haitians, however, the coast guards left food, water and other supplies with the migrants, until their return the next day when they were able to rescue the 18 Haitians remaining.  The Coast Guard said it intervened in 64 illegal trips between October 1, 2021 and May 31, 2022, adding that more than 370 Haitians were arrested, stressing that this is an increase from previous years. .
