iciHaiti - Gonaïves : 600 houses flooded, 3,000 families affected
Friday, June 17, 2022, the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) presented a partial assessment of the situation in Gonaïves, following the torrential rains that fell on the night of June 15, 600 houses were flooded and nearly 3,000 families are affected.

K-Soleil, Praville, Bois-Dorme 2, 7, 8 and 9 and Rue du Quai, Mornes Biénac and Gatereau are listed as the most affected neighborhoods, however, flooding has been reported in at least 13 other neighborhoods, according to the partial assessment of the Civil Protection.

Civil Protection and local authorities requested food, hygiene and other items to help the victims, while many residents had to seek temporary shelter and risk losing all their belongings.

According to Donald Diogenes, the Mayor of the city, the floods were caused by the lack of cleaning of the canals by the Ministry of Public Works.

Saturday, June 18, Acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry chaired at the National Emergency Operation Center (COUN), a working meeting on flood management in Gonaïves, recalling that the entire Government was mobilized, alongside local authorities, to provide emergency aid to disaster victims in Gonaïves.
