iciHaiti - 218th Vertières : Message from the Ambassador of Haiti to the Benelux and the European Union
As part of the commemoration of the 218th anniversary of the Battle of Vertières and the victory of the native army over the French colonial forces (Nov. 18 1803), Jesse Jean, Ambassador of Haiti near the Benelux (Belgium, the Pays- Bas and Luxembourg) and the European Union delivered a message of reflection to all Haitians, which we invite you to read...

Message from Ambassador Jesse Jean :
"My dear compatriots,

The battle of Vertières, the culmination of the incessant and courageous struggles that our ancestors waged in order to put an end to the violence of slavery and to announce to the whole world the need for freedom wherever it is hampered "in irons", is a historic place that must challenge today in more than one way.

It is a strong symbol of the rejection of servitude, an unwavering choice for freedom. But above all, it is the sign of an ideal of socio-political and economic organization which has promoted equality, political self-determination and economic exchange with partners who respect the dignity of peoples.

Through this fierce struggle waged with the spirit of sacrifice, our ancestors showed the whole world, especially the enslaved peoples, the way to freedom. They also paved the way for a genuine welcome policy in the name of humanity.

Today we must think of November 18 not in terms of a date that calls for commemoration, but in terms of a symbol from which we must derive the meaning that should guide us and revitalize us in these times of great concern. and political unrest. Let's think of the courage, the abnegation of our ancestors who had known how to put above all the particular interests, the advantages of the family, the interest of the nascent Nation, the concern for freedom, the need to train a people equal to the peoples of the world.

Let's make this date the object of our reflections, let us return to the intelligences of the time to find tracks of answer to our current problems.

May the Nation be in meditation on this important date in our history and that of suffering humanity.

I wish you a happy feast of November 18, which marks the memory of the victory of the slaves over the French.

Brussels, November 18, 2021

Dr. Jesse Jean Ambassador ."
