iciHaiti - 218th Vertières : Message from Marc Yves St Victor Consul General of Haiti in Chicago
Thursday, November 18, 218th anniversary of the commemoration of the Battle of Vertières and the victory of the native army against the colonial forces of Napoleon's army, Marc Yves St Victor Consul General of Haiti in Chicago issued on this day glorious, a message to all Haitians.

Message from Marc Yves St Victor Consul General of Haiti in Chicago :

"Haitians, My dear compatriots, Dear friends of Haiti,

It is with great honor and great joy that I address you on the occasion of the commemoration of the Battle of Vertières.

November 18 is a turning point in our history as a people. This date is filled with symbols, values, emotions engraved in the hearts and minds of every daughter and son of Haiti. On this day of recall, let us begin by paying a vibrant tribute to the soldiers and officers, who materialized freedom on November 18, 1803, by sweeping the last entrenchments of the Napoleonic army which until then was invincible.

218 years after the victorious battle of Vertières, it is up to us to carry further and higher the dreams of the brave soldiers and officers of the native army. These heroes fought so that a united, integrated and prosperous Haiti could emerge in the concert of free nations.

No nation can be built sustainably without remaining rooted in history. This is why I invite all Haitians without distinction to go and draw from our historical reservoir the useful and necessary lessons for the construction and the economic and social development of Haiti. Our ancestors made a lot of sacrifices to achieve a Haiti of opportunities, a country where living together is at the rendezvous. This unity, which animated the old and the new freemen in their quest for independence, must serve as a compass for us in order to meet the many challenges facing our nation.

The momentum of the hour should be one where, in a common impetus, Haitians living in the diaspora and those still living in the country commit to building a Haiti on the scale of its glorious history. While many countries agree that their diaspora can play a more direct role in political, economic and social affairs, it is clear and obvious that you, her sons and daughters who live outside, are a key element in its development. It is your duty to participate in the decisions that affect the future of the country.

Knowing that all Haitians have the same degree of involvement in the responsibility of bequeathing to future generations a country fundamentally committed to development, I therefore invite my dear brothers and sisters of the Diaspora to take part in the process of reconstruction and economic recovery of Haiti.

Happy commemoration,

'Ann fè batay Vètyè a tounen yon bousàl pou nou angaje nou'"
