Saturday August 28, 2021 the funeral of the former mayor of Cayes Jean Gabriel Fortuné, who died in the earthquake of August 14, https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34575-haiti-news-zapping.html were sung at the Hotel La Crétonne (Les Cayes). Many personalities were present at the ceremony including the Prime Minister ai Ariel Henry, Chancellor Claude Joseph, Margareth Fortuné (sister of the deceased and former Director General of the National Lottery) and former parliamentarians including the former deputy of Delmas Gary Bodeau, Edwin Zenny, Hervé Fourcand and Jean Renel Sénatus.

For Reverend Father Jeannot Luxama in his homily "Gabriel Fortuné offered himself as a holocaust for the cause of his country [...]" For Michèle Sylvie Rameau, mayor of Les Cayes, "Gabriel was a visionary, a leader who was not attached only to his Department but to the whole country [...]" for the former deputy of Les Cayes Jean David Genesté, Gabriel Fortuné "was a great man who marked the history of his time, a man who fought in favor of social justice [...]"

Jean Gabriel Fortuné, was buried in the habitation Péan, at Ferme Le Blanc, (Torbeck) a few kilometers from Les Cayes.

Messages of sympathy

Prime Minister Ariel Henry :
"I am very saddened and I solemnly discover myself in front of the remains of our friend, Jean Gabriel Fortuné. It is an extremely trying time. I also think of all our sisters and brothers who lost their lives in this earthquake. My heart breaks when I rehash these unhappy memories. May God continue to watch over Haiti."

Martine Moïse :
"The country has lost a visionary, a progressive, a pillar. Mayor Gabriel Fortuné dreamed of seeing social justice in the country, where all Haitians would have the chance to live like people. Cross in peace Gabo. The South department and the whole country are proud of your work."

Senate :
The Senate of the Republic is deeply saddened by the death of Senator Gabriel Fortuné, which occurred on Saturday August 14, 2021 during the devastating earthquake that struck the Great South. It sympathizes with the suffering of the family and the populations of Les Cayes and the South who had a well-deserved attachment to the senator. In this painful circumstance, the Senate respectfully prostrates itself before the remains of the colleague and presents to the relatives, friends and allies of the deceased the condolences of the senators and all the staff of the Grand Corps. May the soul of Senator Gabriel Fortuné rest in peace in the house of the Lord !
