The Haitian writer Gary Victor takes a stand against the proposed new Constitution in a post of "reflections" that we publish in its entirety :

"There are certainly plenty of things to reproach the Constitution of 1987 but we must not take in these times of 'banditization' all Haitians for ignoramuses.

1- Why had Francois Duvalier abolished the Senate ? Because the Senate had often been in Haiti for the Executive a troublesome counter-power. It is not because our last senators put on a deplorable spectacle that we must hasten to take advantage of it to prepare the bed for dictatorial power. Even with all its faults, the Senate remained a counter power under Martelly and under Jovenel. The Lower House has always been more under the orders of the Executive.

2- The Referendum https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-32199-haiti-politic-referendum-on-the-constitution-moise-evokes-his-calendar.html has not always been well received in our practices yet unhealthy policies. It is often an open door to dictatorship. Duvalier used it well. The current Constitution, which Jovenel Moise has sworn to respect, prohibits it.

A dictatorship with Francois Duvalier who cannot be too blamed for being a dunce is one thing. But a dictatorship with these dunces that we have today will be more pitiful and even more murderous. Legal bandits are a foretaste."
