iciHaiti - Turks and Caicos Islands : 124 Haitian boat-people intercepted

On September 20, in the territorial waters of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) a 38ft wooden boat containing 124 illegal migrants from Haiti was detected about 1 mile from "Turtle Rock" (at 1.6 km off Providenciales, near West Harbor).

The boat, equipped with 2 large outboard motors, has been intercepted by maritime police officers at 9.49 p.m. During the operation, several Haitians jumped overboard in an attempt to escape but were quickly caught up and arrested, says a press release from the maritime police.

The ship "Sea Guardian", with the assistance of the "Sea Enforcer, towed the Haitian boat to the port of South Dock.

The 124 Haitians were handed over to the Immigration Department for registration and then repatriated to Haiti.
