iciHaiti - Social : Passing of Professor Pierre-Jorès Mérat
The Interministerial Committee for Human Rights (CIDP) learned with dismay of the sudden death of Professor Pierre-Jorès Mérat on Tuesday June 30, 2020 following a heart attack.

Doctor of Geography, Pierre-Jorès Mérat was an active member of CIDP. He has worked on issues relating to the fight against poverty. His doctoral thesis focuses on the coast as a generator of poverty in Haiti.

He has published numerous scientific articles including "Being poor in Haiti" (Être pauvre en Haïti) (Les Cahiers d'Outre-Mer 2019/1 (n°279), pp. 27-49) and co-directed with André Calmont "Haiti between permanence and ruptures: a geography of the territory" (Haïti entre permanences et ruptures : une géographie du territoire) (Ibis Rouge editions, 2015).

At the Ministry of Planning, Pierre-Jorès Mérat was a senior executive of the Poverty and Social Exclusion Observation Unit. It was for this reason that he was chosen to join the CIDP.

A career teacher, Professor Mérat, born in 1968, has taught for more than thirty years at all stages of the Haitian education system.

The Interministerial Committee for Human Rights has lost one of its eminent thinkers in the fight against poverty. He presents his sympathies to his family, his collaborators and friends affected by this disappearance.
