Health expert Carissa Étienne, Director General of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) notes a "worrying trend" in the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus in border areas of the Americas.

"Although the majority of infections in the region are reported in large cities, where economic inequalities and population density stimulate the transmission of the virus, our data show a worrying trend towards high transmission in border areas," she said Tuesday at a press conference.

Etienne mentioned in particular the border areas between Haiti and the Dominican Republic; between Costa Rica and Nicaragua; between French Guiana and Brazil; between Guyana, Suriname and Brazil as well as the Amazon region where the borders of Venezuela, Brazil and Colombia meet and also in the border area between Peru, Brazil and Colombia.
