While the indignation caused by the assassination of the African-American George Floyd by a white American police officer, spreads all over the planet, the Haitian-Canadian writer and Academician Dany Laferrière, during an interview on France Culture especially around two of these works, also expressed himself on racism which we invite you to share and reflect on some of his responses-reflections :

"[...] The white police officer and the young black man in the United States are the final and fatal face to face confrontation between two adversaries, fueled by American history, the source of which is slavery. The policeman who meets blacks is almost in war territory. He is there to repress, to make these insolent, disrespectful or rowdy young blacks understand that they must not touch the American machine of progress and economy. [...]

[...] What is a gathering in the United States ? It is about fifteen blacks gathered. What is a city in the United States ? Thousands of white people gathered. A crowd of whites is called a city. Fifteen blacks gathered, it is a gathering that could call into question the system. [...]

[...] The key to the problem lies in the large American middle class who believe that it is not racist, because it does not commit racist acts. This class thinks that racism does not concern them, that it is a marginal problem, whereas it crosses all the American backbone. [...]"
