On Thursday, Naomi Osaka on the Japanese public network NHK, said she had decided to choose Japanese nationality and that she had gone through the paperwork to obtain her Japanese citizenship before her birthday on October 16, with the prospect of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (July 24 to August 9, 2020) "It gives me a special feeling to try to go to the Olympic Games to represent Japan [...] I think I will be able to put more emotion into it by playing for the pride of the country," adding that she was targeting a gold medal, however, she is worried about the very high Japanese expectations that will weigh on her during these Olympics.
