iciHaiti - Culture : The heritage of the Tainos in Haitian culture
A Taïno earthenware vase of the carrier type, for cooking food during ritual ceremonies, measuring 216mm in height and 440mm in diameter, found in a cave at Gros Morne, is presented in the permanent exhibition room. from the Haitian National Pantheon Museum (MUPANAH). It testifies of the Meillac culture (the art of pottery) a classification of Native American material culture.

Recall that until the end of the fifteenth century, the country was populated by Indigenous people, mainly Taino Indians. Their social system allowed them to control the space defining hunting and fishing territories between the different groups that shared the island. There was another form of space appropriation denoting a religious character with the use of caves and huge rocks whose walls were decorated with incised rock drawings and carved stalagmites. The Tainos worked diorites, quartz... They excelled in stone carving as well as in polishing.

Numerous archaeological research and excavations carried out on the island have uncovered stone tools, fragments of pottery, shells and carved bones from the Taïno culture and testifying to the diversity of their art.

Visit the museum and come to enrich your knowledge on the legacies of the Taïnos Amerindians in the Haitian culture.
