iciHaiti - Montreal : Sit-in for a moratorium on deportations to Haiti 05/11/2018 07:15:34
Dozens of protesters, mostly of Haitian descent, held a rally in front of Citizenship and Immigration Canada offices in Montreal last week to call on the Canadian government to declare a moratorium on deportations to Haiti because of the socio-political instability in Haiti.
According to a sit-in organizer, "the federal authorities should not expel Haitian citizens while at the same time they warn Canadians to avoid any non-essential travel to Haiti because of political unrest and the risk of violence" https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24903-haiti-politic-canada-concerned-by-the-situation-in-haiti.html adding, "In some cases, these Haitian citizens may not have a place to go or enough money to start a new life [...] Some borrowed money, others are indebted to people in Haiti."
Many immigrant Canadians feel that by expelling Haitians in the current situation in Haiti, the Canadian government does not respect its image as a warm and welcoming country ..
