iciHaiti - Agriculture : The price of rice above the five-year average
In its update report on food security in Haiti "Famine Early Warning Systems Network" (FEWS NET) underlines "After about two months of delay, a more or less significant rainfall, in cumulative terms, was recorded in August and during the first 10 days of September. Soil preparation and seeding activities, which started well in the humid mountains in July, are now underway in the other regions.

Precipitation has, however, favored the development of the July and August plantations (maize and beans), most of which are in heading, fruiting or flowering stages. Congo peas, millet, and roots and tubers are growing (except in the North, Northeast and West). In the lower Artibonite, rice harvests have started and will continue until December.

The price of local corn fell by 6% in August, compared to July. Black pea, however, declined less steeply (2.4%), while the price of imported rice and TCS-10 (Artibonite) rice continues to increase. The prices of these products are significantly above their five-year average.

From October 2018 to January 2019, some livelihood zones will remain in Stress (Phase 2 of the CPI); others, in Minimal (Phase 1). However, some households affected by drought (in the North and Northeast), if they do not fully recover from previous shocks, could be in crisis (CPI phase 3). But there is no indication that their number is sufficient to change the classification of the zones."
