iciHaiti - Cholera : Progress threatened for lack of funding
In June 2018, 578 suspected cholera cases, including 12 deaths, were recorded, representing a 15% decrease in suspected cases compared to the same period in 2017. Nevertheless, punctual outbreaks continue to hit the country in the departments of Artibonite, Centre, Ouest and more sporadically Nord-Ouest. The departments of Centre and Artibonite are still the two most affected departments, with 181 and 216 suspected cases respectively.

With 2,688 suspect cases in the first half of the year (compared to 7,604 in 2017), HRP's initial target of 12,000 suspected cases in 2018 remains within reach if the current level of response is maintained throughout the year. However, despite the good results in 2017 due to a well-financed response mechanism throughout the year, the same predictability of funding could not be maintained in 2018, jeopardizing the significant progress of the past two years.

The rapid response NGOs that work daily with the MSPP rapid teams are only funded until September 2018 which is a financial visibility that is too short. An early reduction in the number of response teams poses a risk that cholera might spread again in the country in the absence of rapid outbreak control.
