iciHaiti - Politic : The Charge d'Affaires of the American Embassy on tour in Jacmel
A delegation led by Robin Diallo, the Chargé d'Affaires of the United States Embassy in Haiti, paid a visit to the Southeast metropolis on Wednesday 25 and Thursday, October 26, 2017. This tour was part of the framework of a courtesy visit of the actors of the civil society as well as the local authorities and especially to supervise certain projects beneficiary of American financings.

Robin Diallo who privileged education in her agenda held a meeting with several hundred students from different faculties at the Public University of South-East of Jacmel (UPSEJ) in the presence among others, of deans of faculties of management and administrative sciences and agronomy, faculty, as well as rectorate executives. The delegation focused its presentation on the presentation of scholarship programs of the American Embassy in Haiti.

Let's remember that the UPSEJ, founded in 2011, counts for the academic year 2016-2017, a total of 960 students from the Faculty of Education Sciences, the Faculty of Management and Administrative Sciences and the faculty of agronomy. In addition to issues related to fellowship programs, university officials seized the opportunity to outline several problems facing the UPSEJ, particularly at the infrastructure level.

According to the Chargé d'Affaires, Robin Diallo, the American Embassy in Haiti, wants to provide students, its various research services, particularly in the field of education, while encouraging them to enter the scholarship programs reminding that the last two years "More than 900 Haitians have enrolled in scholarship programs of the United States Embassy." She invited the students to persevere in their studies and to continue the search for opportunities to take their destiny and that of Haiti in hand.

To contribute to the strengthening of the University Library, a donation of works by American authors, translated into French, was donated by the American Embassy.

Meeting Haitian institutions that were funded by the US government, NGOs and US agencies working in the Southeast department, was also one of the priorities of Diallo in order to assess the impact of different projects already executed or in progress in the region. Thus, the delegation visited CARE's offices in Jacmel, where a presentation of the "Kore Lavi" program of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID - Haiti) was made. This 6-year program, initiated by "Food for Peace", supports the Government of Haiti in creating a social safety net for food and nutrition security, which favors the consumption of quality local products.

The delegation also visited "Art Creation Foundation For Children", an artisanal center in Jacmel in operation for 14 years, which offers training and assistance to poor children.

In addition, the American diplomat spoke for over an hour, with local authorities, including Pierre Michel Lafontant, Southeast Departmental Delegate, Mayor Marky Kessa and Deputy Mayor Lourdie César de Jacmel, Mones Auguste, Director of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) in the Southeast. The discussions focused on the main challenges and opportunities of the region. The state of the roads, health, electricity were some of the problems exposed by the authorities at this meeting.

At the end of the tour, Robin Diallo visited the Jacmel Film School "Cine Institute", the public market in the city where many of the program's beneficiaries can buy food at affordable prices and was delighted with its different meetings in Jacmel.
