"The news of the death of President René Préval reaches me and makes me deeply sad when I am in Burkina Faso on official and working visit," declared Michaëlle Jean, Secretary General of la Francophonie, adding "I well knew the Stateman, our relations were most frank, in a mutual esteem, at all times and in all circumstances, I had his confidence and his listening. I retain his generous and attentive spirit, his real commitment to Haiti, his concern to see the country progress on a path of sustainable, responsible, inclusive human, economic development, his desire to see the rule of law consolidated, the national dialogue root, stability grow and misery regress. I will not fail to say how René Préval was also a devotee of la Francophonie.
His positive balance at the end of 2009 with a commendable growth surge was qualified as historical. The dream suddenly collapsed, under the violence of the devastating and murderous earthquake of January 12, 2010.
