iciHaiti - Environment : Ratification in the Senate of a law transforming the SMCRS
The Law proposed by Deputy Gary Bodeau (Delmas) to transform the Metropolitan Service of Collection of the Solid Residues (SMCRS) into a National Service of Management of the Solid Residues (SNGRS) with the objective of solving the problem of the rubbish in Haiti, was passed unanimously in the Senate after amendment, after being voted in the Chamber of Deputies in 2016.

The SNGRS created under this law will fall under the Ministry of the Environment and will have to collaborate with the local authorities to better take charge of the management and transformation of waste. It will be responsible for collecting, transporting, sorting, recycling, managing and converting solid waste and defining the safety standards and criteria for the establishment and management of landfill sites, including sites for special and medical waste.

Although it has already been passed in the lower house, this law has to be returned to the Chamber of Deputies because of the changes made by the Senate and will have to be ratified again in the same terms in second reading, before being transmitted to the Executive for publication in the official newspaper "Le Moniteur".
