iciHaiti - Social : Over 200,000 domestic slaves under 15 years in the country 12/03/2016 08:36:52
A study conducted by the Norwegian Fafo research foundation, in partnership with the Haitian Institute of Childhood (IHE), reveals that approximately 200,000 Haitian children under 15 years, devoting more than 14 hours per week to domestic and other tasks, often in deplorable conditions. 24% sometimes work even at night... a situation deemed unacceptable because it is an exploitation of children in domestic (Restavek).
This study also reveals that these children work, "for the most part in dangerous conditions or analogous to slavery." The study points out that one child in four does not live with his biological parents and 77% of these children have a school delay. The study recommends two protection mechanisms : an "informal" protection based on children, adults and the community involved in the child's placement and a more institutional protection, under the authority of the State with the support of NGOs, international organizations and actors of Civil society.
