"Six years have passed since the devastating earthquake in Haiti that killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced 1.5 million from their homes on January 12, 2010. Today, we remember those we lost and stand together as a nation that continues to persevere. While today is a somber one of remembrance, it is also a reminder that we must unite as a global community to ensure that what happened to Haiti, the way it happened, never occurs again. We must continue to work with countries suffering from poverty and economic insecurity so that they are better able to mitigate the losses of natural disasters and be better equipped to recover. Haiti has made progress but much work still remains. I stand today in remembrance and solidarity with the people of my country." IH/ iciHaiti
