iciHaiti - Agriculture : Severe rainfall deficit

Rainfall during the second season (Summer) continues to be below average over Haiti, with deficits reaching 100-200 mm in parts of Grand’Anse, South, and West Departments. Rainfall deficits have persisted in Haiti since April, with El Nino conditions likely to result in below-average rainfall through the rest of the year.

Improvements in rainfall in September have encourage some crop planting, although this likely remains below average. The late onset of rainfall in many areas is also likely to delay the agricultural calendar and result in later harvests than normal. Below-average rainfall has also resulted in reports of low groundwater for irrigated farming activities.

Rainfall during the next week is expected to remain below average, with maximum accumulations reaching 20 mm.
