iciHaiti - Social : In Suriname, Haiti is remembered... 25/08/2015 10:31:26 In July 1998, UNESCO designated the 23rd of August to memorialize the transatlantic slave trade and its abolition. The date was chosen in relation with the uprising that started during the night of August 22 to 23 1791 in Haiti (called St Domingue at the time) which set forth events that were crucial in the abolition of the whole transatlantic slave trade. Alex Jospitre, Head of Mission of the Consulate, Former Ambassador Henk Herrenberg representing the President of the Republic of Suriname and Mister Iwan Winjngaarde, President of the Federation of African in Suriname respectfully laid flowers at the foot the Kwakoestatue in honor of our Ancestors who fought for the abolition of slavery in the world.
