iciHaiti - FLASH : Appearance of an abnormal quantity of seaweed
In a press release, the Minister of Public Health and Population (MSPP), Florence Duperval Guillaume, informs of the abnormal appearance of a quantity of seaweed, especially on the southern coast of Haiti, and recommends avoid to introduce at sea level...

"On certain coasts of Haiti, particularly those in the South, the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) shares the observation of the population of the abnormal appearance of a quantity of seaweed.

These algae come from the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic Ocean and their massive proliferation in the region of the Caribbean and Latin America is a consequence of climate imbalance.

Rich in hydrogen sulfide, algae also called 'Sargassum' give off a foul odor of rotten eggs, can have negative health impacts. Continuous exposure of the population can cause symptoms such as itchy eyes, runny nose, coughing up to nausea and vomiting.

In collaboration with the Ministries of Environment, Public Works and Interior, MSPP asks all communities living in the coastline affected by this phenomenon to avoid as much as possible to introduce at sea level while waiting to find a workaround for this situation.

At the onset of these signs and/or symptoms cited above, the MSPP recommends affected people to get to the nearest health center for appropriate care,"
the statement said.
